Breast Reduction in Men (Gynaecomastia)

Gynaecomastia (female-like breast in men) is a permanent form of excessive breast tissue and fat in the breast that can occur during puberty in men. This condition can be seen in otherwise sexually and hormonally healthy individuals and can also be the result of some health problems. It can be seen due to health problems such as excessive weight gain and loss, drug use, thyroid function disorders, renal failure, testicular development disorders, increased estrogen hormone levels and liver disorders.

Gynaecomastia affects the physical appearance of men and psychologically disturbs them. The fact that breasts are a symbol of femininity and the meaning attributed to breasts cause men to need breast reduction surgeries. Surgery is the only option at an appropriate age, especially in those who do not have any other health problems. In cases where medical treatment is tried but does not give successful results in patients with concomitant diseases, aesthetic surgeries become the only choice.

What is Gynaecomastia Surgery?

Aesthetic surgery operations performed to remove the fat accumulated in the breasts of men, excess breast tissue, excess skin and to eliminate the asymmetry problem between both breasts are called gynaecomastia surgery.

Men whose breasts cannot be reduced with medical treatments; whose general health condition does not pose a danger for surgery; who are determined to improve their physical appearance, whose breasts do not continue to grow and who are uncomfortable with the growth in their breasts; are ideal candidates for breast reduction operations. Although the person is generally expected to leave puberty for gynaecomastia surgeries, with the approval of surgeons, these operations can be performed to prevent psychological traumas that may occur during adolescence.

How is Breast Reduction Surgery Performed in Men?

If the main factor causing breast enlargement in men is excessive fat accumulation in the breast area, the fat is usually loosened with the help of thin cannulas through several incisions opened in the chest area with liposuction. Afterwards, the fat is removed from the body by vacuum suction. Different liposuction techniques can be used at this stage; the most accurate method will be determined by the surgeon. This operation is performed with closed technique and there is no permanent scar on the skin.

In addition to fat accumulation in the breasts of the person, if the breast tissue is overgrown and there is excess skin, the excision technique can be used. This technique can also be preferred to create a more natural appearance around the nipple. In some patients, both methods can be used at the same time. The decision belongs to the surgeon who analyses the results of the patient’s health examinations and takes into account her expectations.

During breast reduction surgery, the patient can be anaesthetised with general or local anaesthesia. The type of anaesthesia is also determined individually for the patient. Patients may need to use a corset for a while after male breast reduction surgery, which takes an average of 60 minutes.
