Tummy Tuck (Abdominoplasty)
Tummy tuck, also known as abdominoplasty, is one of the most commonly chosen body contouring surgeries, especially among women. It involves the removal of excess fat and loose skin from the abdominal area, as well as the tightening and restructuring of weakened connective tissue and muscles to create a more aesthetically pleasing abdominal region. Tummy tuck procedures can be performed as a regional or partial procedure.
Tummy tuck surgeries are performed to correct deformities in the abdominal area caused by aging, genetic factors, post-pregnancy changes, previous surgeries, or significant weight loss. It should not be considered a weight loss method.
Abdominoplasty is suitable for individuals with realistic expectations, a health status appropriate for surgery, and those seeking to improve their physical appearance.
What is a Tummy Tuck?
A tummy tuck involves the removal of sagging skin and excess fat from the abdominal area, along with the firm repair of loosened connective tissue and muscles. It is a widely performed body aesthetic surgery. Before the procedure, important factors such as the patient's expectations, general health condition, medications, and any previous surgeries are evaluated by the plastic surgeon.
After the surgery, the patient can achieve a flat abdominal area with excess tissue removed. If post-operative instructions are followed, the patient can quickly recover and return to daily life. Tummy tuck surgeries, performed under general anesthesia, typically last between 1 to 3 hours, and the patient may need to stay in the hospital for 1 or 2 nights.
How is a Tummy Tuck Performed?
Before the tummy tuck procedure, general anesthesia is administered for the patient's comfort. For a full tummy tuck, an incision is made from the upper border of the pubic area extending to both sides, usually in a location that remains hidden within underwear (similar to a cesarean section scar but extending to the sides). The shape and length of the incision may vary based on the extent of the procedure required for the abdominal area. Once the abdominal skin is lifted, weakened abdominal muscles are exposed and repaired.
If excess skin is present in the upper abdominal area, the surgery extends to the upper border of the ribcage, and the upper abdominal region is also tightened. As the navel is displaced downward due to the tightening, it is detached from the surrounding abdominal skin while preserving its stalk and is brought out through a newly created opening. The incision is then closed with self-dissolving stitches and bandages.
